Argentina is the 2nd largest country
in South America. (Brazil is the largest.)
It is the 15th largest in the world.
It is less than 1/3 the size of USA.
 
Argentina's climate ranges from
tropical in the north to the frozen tundra
of the south.
 
Argentina is home to Cerro Aconcagua,
the Western Hemisphere's tallest mountain,
and Laguna del Carbon,
the lowest point in the Western Hemisphere.
 
Buenos Aires is the capital city.
 
Spanish is the official language of Argentina.
It gained its independence from Spain
on July 9, 1816. Revolution Day is May 25th.
The majority of people are Catholic.
 
Everyone may vote at age 18. Argentina's
governmental structure is patterned after
the US and Western Europe.
 
Argentina claims the Falkland Islands and Antarctica,
but these claims are disputed.

 Before 1816, the land now known as Argentina
was part of the United Provinces of the Rio Plata.
This people gained their independence from Spain
in 1816. After Bolivia, Paraguay, and Uruguay split
off, the remaining land became Argentina.
 
The sun in the middle of the flag represents the
sun that shone on the first day the people stood
for independence (May 25, 1816). This sun also
represents Inti, the Inca god of the sun.

Argentina is a major competitor in soccer,
or football as they say in most countries
outside the US.

The gaucho is the cowboy of Argentina. Gauchos raise cattle
in the Pampas or wide plains of northern Argentina. Beef is an
important commodity in Argentina today.
